Villanelle for the New Economy

Bondi_Bay,_Sydney

Seems some people dig it, some live in fear.
Robo-called workers told get out of there.
Who’s in the shadows in back of it all? There’s no-one here.

Surprised? It’s been on TV every day of the year,
Panellists & billionaires, Amazon-drones in the air.
Seems some people dig it, some live in fear.

‘F*ck this,’ says the union & the comrades all cheer
But cry when they beat us, drag us round by the hair.
Who’s in the shadows in back of it all? There’s no-one here.

My Mum’s always shopping, says ‘Don’t worry dear.’
& Dad takes his meds, stares blank from his chair
Seems some people dig it, some live in fear

I’m chasing something that never comes near
thru doorways and doorways.  Knock, knock. Who’s there?
Who’s in the shadows in back of the hall? There’s no-one here.

There’s winners and losers, that’s painfully clear,
The losses pile up but governments forbear
Because some people dig it, some live in fear.
And who’s in the shadows in back of it all? There’s no-one my dear.
